A Vegetarian in the House
2002-06-20 - 9:41 a.m.

Christie (our almost 12 year old) has become a modified Vegetarian. For those of you who know her, she is passion so you can imagine how fervently she embraced the idea once she decided.

Last week she came to us and said she no longer wanted to eat meat. Not for a philosophical reason per se, but she didn't like the taste. She did tell us briefly that there is a tremendous waste in eating beef which once consumed many times more grain than she would. (Shades of Gen :-)

As she is only 12 and needs adequate protein and iron, I was not wild about a vegan diet. We discussed various types of vegetarian diets. I told her I would endorse the change as long as she became a lacto-ovarian and would eat milk and egg products. So, in her typical way, she went to the library and researched what she wanted.

She has decided that fish is really no problem and has minimal concerns with chicken. So it is really just meat off the hoof that is objectionable.

So, what about Katie? She lifted her gaze from her latest book, raised an eyebrow and stated, "I have no intention of giving up meat." She has been supportive of both my diet changes and Christie's and is very interested in cooking new and different things.

So, this week has been about what Christie will eat. The weekend will be about Pennsic prep and last minute tasks for her birthday celebrations next week.

I always get her a charm for her charm bracelet...maybe this year some kind of vegetable :-)

That's what is happening at our house. What is going on at yours?
