Passages
2005-01-23 - 7:23 p.m.

Les and Gpa eat lunch together almost every Thurs or Friday. Last week he mentioned that he was ready to start cleaning out closets from some of Dwights things. So he asked us to bring the girls over to try on some things.

My MinL was a tiny woman like Kate but over the years (as most women do) had changed in size. And she had the world's tiniest doll feet...size 4. So I knew most of her things would be the wrong size. Still, I knew this was very important to him and had the potential to be an important passage for the girls too.

So we went, the girls started a little quietly, reverently touching things and saying, "I remember this dress." It was hard but good. Kate was amazed at the dozens of shoes and I think a bit envious that her feet would not fit in them! They tried on hats with gusto and Tshirts. Then they found several cool leather belts and bags from the sixties and seventies. Funny, they were not as interested in the glittery, woven numbers that screamed "80's" to me! We found a tiny ceramic dish with a lid crosstiched with KTs footprints...tiny as she was. They also gloried in her stash of beautiful kid gloves.

They have her tiny doll hands so they took home bright yellow ones, navy, black and brown ones and each a pair of white wrist gloves and white full length gloves. One day, they plan to wear them to their weddings...cause it would be just like "her being there to hold my hand."

In other news and reminding me of passages...Johnny Carson died today. I am more than a little sad. His shy and impish smile and quiet, wry delivery brought us all so much late night laughter.

Kate is on a mission for prom prep. (She gets the planning early from me and the frugality from her Dad). She loves to look for her things on sale so this weekend found us bringing home TWO dresses after trying on everything from tacky to sequins to wedding cake shapes. One is a white sheath with grecian draping on the bodice and the other is a gorgeous black velvet halter with a sheer inset in the back and inside the back kick pleat. No, she will not be changing at the prom but it was way too gorgeous to leave in the store when it was marked down to $45.00! One day all too soon there will be Sorority formals.

The lady that Gpa has been dating has now graduated to being referred to as "my lady-friend" now that all the children have met her. Kind of sweet.

Tonight we watched Fantasia 2000. I never cried when Pomp and Circumstance played before. I may have to spend May in a cloud of sedation.
