A Trio of Days
2004-11-01 - 10:22 a.m.

Yesterday, today and tomorrow are special days meant to honor and remember those who have gone before.

For me, all Hallow's Eve is less about jack-o-lanterns, goblins and fake vampire teeth than it is a remembrance of those who have died particularly those in the last year.

All Saints reminds us of the faith of those who have gone before and who the Church has recognized and have not yet recognized as saints.

All Souls reminds us of those who have gone before with the hope of reunion with us in heaven.

I am not sure why but I have found great comfort in these church days. I suspect it ties in to our Southern veneration of heritage and ancestry. Indeed, there is a sense of connection in the belief in the communion of saints and in exploring the mystery of death and the promise of eternal life.

And a peace that is so much more than the fear so prevalent in our culture's celebration of Halloween.
