Crown in the Clouds
2004-05-02 - 5:18 p.m.

So, we are finally home. Weary but satisfied after a really nice SCA trip to Crannog Mor.

The day dawned with a thick layer of fog masking the color from the field. A cold persistent light rain fell until everything was damp and grey. We proceeded with setup anyway, hopeful for the sun.

Before the processional, the fog began to lift bringing color back into the landscape. First the contrast of the green against the white pavilions, then the full burst of the color that is the pageantry of the SCA. Breathtaking.

Looking back the weekend was FULL so my bests will far outweigh any worsts.

WORST:

That last bit of road with the edges crumbling off there was so little shoulder...special!

Not being "On" yet and being at the field. Smart mouth/sharp tone and instant regret. Lord I gotta remember to just stay private til that second cup of coffee.

The anxiety of getting pavilions up knowing that they have to be up well before Crown.

Extremely limited Nia time, Rhiannon time, Ilse time and Cassandra time.

Sharing Emma...never know quite what to do on those days.

BEST

The site. It is really hard to judge kingdom event bids on paper but we just did not feel good about the site when it came in for 12th Night. We thought it looked more like a Crown site...and boy was it. Beautiful, just beautiful.

The list stuff from Nottinghill. Way back when we did a Crown and Janos busted hump to bring the "vision" for the field to life. He and Rachel, their household, our Canton and Barony have done so much to keep that going. It makes Crown for Atlantia now. Pride

My vantagepoint. His Majesty gave the Seneschal's Office a place of respect on the field. It was an unexpected treat and honor. We had a great opportunity to see the pageantry and enjoy the company of wonderful Monarchs. Sweet.

The staff. From Gracie and the folks in Crannog Mor to Sir Dagonet, the marshals, heralds, MOLs, waterbearers and runners. What a team. Smooth as silk, totally efficient but joyful...the personification of joy in service. Joy

My company. Muirgheal and Cormac and William and Julien all day. Laughter and friendship. Special visits with folks who came by to chat and spend a few moments. Warmth.

C and P at Court. She was absolutely elegant and he was in a rare fit of giddy humor. Our Queen had stepped out of a painting but approached each award with a gentle smile that personalized each moment. Our King was regal and commanded our attention but then dissolved us into giggles. There were several profound moments and our Monarchs moved easily through it all. Confidence.

Our daughters. I know I say it a lot but they are amazing. I look at them now and I both thrilled and humbled. Every day brings new evidence of their growth in self assurance and respect. Tenderness.

The list. So many combatants! The tension of knowing that expectations grew and were crushed with each round. The realization of a long journey as Janos strode across the field to Rachel after winning her a Crown. Love

Late nights. So often lately we are off site or small cabins do not allow the gathering of people in a relaxed state. A rare treat of Colin time. It was cozy and wonderful to play musical chairs with such a fun witty group of people. Happiness.

Quotes from the weekend:

That isn't drifting fog...we are at altitude. That is a cloud.

You have to tell him he needs to grow some more facial hair.

Haven't you ever seen one that just made you think. 'That must hurt?'

The Momma Force.

Beard comb-overs.

If you bring coffe, you can get bids.
